Welcome
to the homepage of SourceSync! You might be asking yourself..."What's SourceSync?"
SourceSync is a new project I am managing on SourceForge that will allow developers to use VSS (Visual SourceSafe) in a distributed manner. If you have ever attempted to access a VSS database over a VPN or any other WAN link, you know that Visual SourceSafe is almost unusable across these connections. Also there is the issue of not having a fulltime connection to the VSS database. What if you want to work from a remote location that does not have network connectivity to the server housing the VSS database? SourceSync will allow users to work on a replica of the VSS database (or just a project within the database) at home then allow the user to synchronize with the server when they have connectivity again. There are a lot of developers out there that work from remote locations, and many times projects have developers that span across multiple sites. Using SourceSafe over a WAN connection is not a good solution because remote developers spend more time checking in/out code than actually developing the code. The only real solution that addresses this need is SourceOffSite, but it can get quite expensive quickly and doesn't allow VSS databases to work in a distributed manner. Hopefully SourceSync will be a cost effective solution (Open Source) for businesses that have projects housed in VSS spanning across multiple sites. Currently SourceSync is still in the planning phase, but development is moving along rather quickly. If you are interested in a SourceSync, check in from time to time. I am hoping right now for a beta release around the beginning of February '06. You can check out our project page on SourceForge here. If you know someone that could use SourceSync, please help me spread the word about this project! Eventually I hope to get around to putting some good stuff out here on this site, but for now, this is all I've got.
